Sheffield United’s manager, Paul Heckingbottom, has categorically dismissed any rumors linking Oli McBurnie to a possible transfer to Leeds United this summer. McBurnie, who is 27 years old and born in Leeds, shares close friendships with several players at Elland Road.
While McBurnie attended various Leeds matches last season as a guest of Luke Ayling, there is no factual basis to the claims of a transfer within Yorkshire at this point. When questioned about whether his former club had made any contact with Sheffield United regarding McBurnie, Heckingbottom unequivocally responded to the Examiner, stating, “No.”
When further pressed for details and asked whether it can be assumed that McBurnie will remain at Bramall Lane, Heckingbottom confirmed, “Yes, he’s staying.” In the previous Championship season, the Blades’ striker secured victory 13 times and contributed with two assists. He formed a noteworthy partnership with Iliman Ndiaye, playing a significant role in their automatic promotion.
However, McBurnie is among several Sheffield United players whose contracts are expiring soon. He has particularly shone since Heckingbottom assumed the managerial role in November 2021, and the manager expresses a strong desire to secure his services for an extended duration.
“I certainly hope so in terms of contract discussions,” Heckingbottom commented. “With me and Oli, it’s a blend of firm encouragement. I hold him in high regard, but I also acknowledge that, particularly over the past few years, both during my tenure and his time at Sheffield United, people might not have witnessed his optimal performance—a fact I’m well aware of, as is Oli, regarding his capabilities.
“He will be challenged to reach that level, and even if we fall slightly short, it’s better than settling for our current position, isn’t it? That’s our approach—he will continually face challenges and expectations.”
